Under Byte, represented by its development team ("we," "our," or "the App"),
is a secure, ephemeral chat application developed as a Final Year Project (FYP).
This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our mobile application.
1. Information We Collect
Under Byte is designed with privacy as a core principle. We collect only the minimum data necessary to
provide our services.
a. User-Generated Content
- Messages: Text messages are processed to enable real-time communication.
- Media and Files: Images, videos, and audio files are temporarily stored and shared
within chat rooms.
- Ephemeral Nature: Messages and files are temporary and deleted when rooms expire or are
removed.
b. Room Metadata
- Room Codes: Used to create and join chat sessions.
- Guest Names: Temporary names used only within chat sessions.
2. Permissions We Request
- Internet & Network State: To send and receive messages and files.
- Media/Storage: To upload images and videos.
- Microphone: To record audio messages when selected.
- File Provider: To securely handle file sharing in Android.
3. Data Storage and Security
- Local Storage: Room metadata stored on-device using Room database.
- Remote Storage: Data is used only to relay messages to chat participants.
- Automatic Cleanup: Local data is cleaned on app startup and room deletion.
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or transfer personal information to third parties.
Data is shared only with users who have the specific room code.
5. Third-Party Services
- Retrofit / OkHttp – Network communication
- Coil – Image loading and caching
- Media3 (ExoPlayer) – Video playback
These libraries support app functionality and do not collect personal data through our implementation.
6. Children's Privacy
Our service is not intended for children under 13.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
